Tooth brushing tips

How you BRUSH your TEETH matters a great deal, with how often you brush, how long you brush, the kind of technique and the toothbrush you use, all major influences on the effectiveness of your brushing. To gain the maximum benefit from brushing, you should brush for at least two minutes morning and night, using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and a flexible neck. The advantage of these toothbrushes is that they remove the plaque and debris from your teeth without damaging your teeth and gums. It’s all in the technique.

You should clean your teeth systematically, starting at the back of your mouth with the toothbrush bristle at the gum line on a 45° angle, brushing gently in a soft and circular motion. If you scrub too hard from side to side, you can run the risk of causing your gums to recede, as well as damaging the tooth enamel. You should take care to brush carefully along the inner, outer and chewing surfaces, making sure you tip the toothbrush so you can reach the inner front areas of the teeth, which are often missed.

If limited dexterity is an issue, you might consider using a powered or electric toothbrush. They can be programmed to run for two minutes, making keeping to the correct length of brushing time easy, and the very good ones are rechargeable, with pressure sensors and they even rate your cleaning. 

Be sure to change your toothbrush or toothbrush head every 3 months or as soon as the bristles bend.

What are Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are very fine tooth-coloured porcelain covers which are seamlessly bonded to the front of prepared teeth. They are a more conservative treatment than a crown and can be used if the tooth is strong and healthy. 

They can be suitable for people who have very misaligned teeth, and for those who did not wish to have braces or Invisalign orthodontic treatment. 

If teeth are discoloured, worn, or chipped away, porcelain veneers may be a treatment option where the tooth can be rebuilt exactly as it ought to for best aesthetics and durability, and allows the dentist to rebuild your smile with a greater capacity to change the shade and shape of the teeth.

E-cigarettes

Look out for new vaping pens with are unobtrusive with flavours like mango and glacier mint, and high tech with recharging by plugging into a laptop, and the nicotine is more palatable because it is made of salts, with a high dose of nicotine administered.. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in America have launched an investigation into luring children into using e-cigarettes, and have forbidding illegal sales and eBay postings, with children reported to be getting hooked on nicotine.  European regulations are stricter and are demanding that the dose of nicotine be reduced, with sales to under 18’s and marketing campaigns banned.

Do they harm your health?
E-cigarettes contain e-juice, also called e-liquid, with nicotine, the highly addictive drug that makes it hard for smokers to quit, but without the toxic chemicals from burning tobacco. They vary but generally contain propylene glycol, glycerin, water, nicotine, and flavours. E-cigarettes involve some health risks, though they are not more toxic than smoking cigarettes.

Does that mean they are harmless?
No, the World Health Organisation have investigated and reported in 2016 that vaping does not help people stop smoking. Nicotine is a poison that has as an effect on blood vessels that may increase people's heart attack risk. It has effects on reproductive health, and exposure during pregnancy can harm the development of the foetus and lead to low birth weights. It is toxic to a young person's developing brain, respiratory and body systems. The vapour delivers particles small enough to reach deep into the lungs which are not harmless like water vapour. Propylene glycol, the chemical found in e-liquids, can irritate the eyes and airways, and they can degrade into formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, both of which are considered carcinogens. 

The long term health effects on people who get nicotine from vaping over time are not known because e-cigarettes have been on the market for only 10 years, so it is unclear as to whether propylene glycol, an irritant to the respiratory tract, possibly results in lung problems after decades of vaping, with no long term studies.The full extent of their effects on heart and lung health, as well as their carcinogenic potential is unknown at this stage.

There are 7700 flavourings to make vaping appealing which are used in devices which may affect people's health, and there might be respiratory effects when they are  inhaled.

Baby teeth are so important

Although primary (or baby) teeth are only present during early childhood years, they play an important role in the development of your child’s smile and long term oral health.

This is because primary teeth:

  • Help protect developing adult teeth
  • Prevent jaw bone loss and gum deterioration
  • Retain space within the mouth for the correct positioning of adult teeth
  • Support the development of your child’s jaw and facial structure

It is highly important to invest in the health of your child’s baby teeth by maintaining a comprehensive at home dental care routine and visiting the dentist and dental hygienist every six months for a check-up, or yearly at least.

TOP TIPS TO CARE FOR BABIES AND TODDLERS' TEETH

1. Give your baby and toddler whole and unprocessed foods, as much as is possible.

2. There is no reason to ever give your baby or toddler anything with refined sugars, including cakes, biscuits, lollies, ice-cream and sugary drinks, including juices. Some fruit or cheese is a good little treat.

3. Breast feed your baby as long as is possible, and as long as your are comfortable.

4. Never add anything to formula or milk in a bottle or cup. Adding honey or something like that will not make your baby sleep better. 

5. Start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as they come through, around 6 months of age, but don't worry if they come through later than this.

6. Do brush your toddler's teeth even if they get upset with you about this. The night time brushing is incredibly important to remove all of the food debris that gets stuck in the back teeth to prevent decay.

7. It sounds impossible, but if you can, floss your toddler's teeth from 2.5 years of age.

8. Take your toddler to the dentist around the age of 2.5 for a gentle introduction and ride in the chair, and to make regular dental preventive care a part of life for your child. Six monthly dental checks are best. Polishes with the dentist are normally done around the age of 5 to keep the teeth stain-free.

9. Use a baby toothbrush twice a day from when the teeth come through, and use the smallest dab of child's toothpaste. Keep the toothpaste away from your baby and treat it like a medicine. Change your baby's toothbrush regularly.

10. The baby teeth are critically important to keep the bite in the correct place, and toddlers are often seen with draining and painful abscesses which require General Anaesthetic work with Dental specialists. Although they do all fall out by the time your child is a teenager, the condition of the baby teeth is a marker of how the adult teeth will most likely be.
