Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Leila Haywood

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) has been introduced by the federal government to make that task a little easier if you receive benefits such as Family Tax Benefit A payments. The CDBS helps you keep your kids’ teeth in great shape by providing you with up to $1000 that you can use over a two calendar year period on a range of dental services including examinations, routine cleaning, fillings, and root canals.

Mouthguards

Leila Haywood

A MOUTHGUARD POLICY FOR SPORTS MEDICINE AUSTRALIA highlights a commitment to safe play in sports that might cause injuries to the head, face or teeth. In season time for high contact sports, such as hockey, AFL and NRL, is a good time to consider a customised mouthguard to reduce the risk of dental trauma.

Dental injuries are often dealt our during sports training and participation, and a mouthguard offers the best protection for the head, jaws and teeth on field.

A mouthguard policy has been developed in line with Sports Medicine Australia that indicates the role of customised mouthguards in absorbing and distributing the forces of sudden impacts to the face. Without a mouthguard these can result in serious injury to the mouth and jaws, with lengthy and complex treatment and costs that are far greater than the cost of a mouthguard.

The Mouthguard policy is a commitment to the operating policy of every sport in Australia.

1. Mouthguards are mandatory and to be worn by all players during training and games.

2. Club operate a strict No MOUTHGUARD, No play policy without exception

3. Coaches and managers actively check all players for compliance and remove non complying players from training and games until they are able to comply.

Few sports in Australia mandate that mouthguards should be worn during training sessions and games, in spite of the many benefits of mouthguards and their ability to reduce the incidence of severe dental trauma. Increasing numbers of sporting organisations recommend that mouthguards are routinely used, and Hockey Australia is distributing welcoming mouthguard resource packs to every player. This is a wonderful step that ensures players are aware of how serious dental injuries from high impact blows to the face can be and the realisation that wearing a custom and professional fitted mouthguard is a necessary addition to a sporting kit. A double laminate mouthguard made by your dental professional is an excellent protective device for the teeth, jaws and mouth during sports that may contact the face and cause injuries. These take around a week to make and come in an amazing array of 34 billion colour combinations available!

Baby teeth are so important

Leila Haywood

Although primary (or baby) teeth are only present during early childhood years, they play an important role in the development of your child’s smile and long term oral health.

This is because primary teeth:

  • Help protect developing adult teeth
  • Prevent jaw bone loss and gum deterioration
  • Retain space within the mouth for the correct positioning of adult teeth
  • Support the development of your child’s jaw and facial structure

It is highly important to invest in the health of your child’s baby teeth by maintaining a comprehensive at home dental care routine and visiting the dentist and dental hygienist every six months for a check-up, or yearly at least.

TOP TIPS TO CARE FOR BABIES AND TODDLERS' TEETH

1. Give your baby and toddler whole and unprocessed foods, as much as is possible.

2. There is no reason to ever give your baby or toddler anything with refined sugars, including cakes, biscuits, lollies, ice-cream and sugary drinks, including juices. Some fruit or cheese is a good little treat.

3. Breast feed your baby as long as is possible, and as long as your are comfortable.

4. Never add anything to formula or milk in a bottle or cup. Adding honey or something like that will not make your baby sleep better.

5. Start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as they come through, around 6 months of age, but don't worry if they come through later than this.

6. Do brush your toddler's teeth even if they get upset with you about this. The night time brushing is incredibly important to remove all of the food debris that gets stuck in the back teeth to prevent decay.

7. It sounds impossible, but if you can, floss your toddler's teeth from 2.5 years of age.

8. Take your toddler to the dentist around the age of 2.5 for a gentle introduction and ride in the chair, and to make regular dental preventive care a part of life for your child. Six monthly dental checks are best. Polishes with the dentist are normally done around the age of 5 to keep the teeth stain-free.

9. Use a baby toothbrush twice a day from when the teeth come through, and use the smallest dab of child's toothpaste. Keep the toothpaste away from your baby and treat it like a medicine. Change your baby's toothbrush regularly.

10. The baby teeth are critically important to keep the bite in the correct place, and toddlers are often seen with draining and painful abscesses which require General Anaesthetic work with Dental specialists. Although they do all fall out by the time your child is a teenager, the condition of the baby teeth is a marker of how the adult teeth will most likely be.

Good habits from a very early age create good habits for life.

WINTER SOLSTICE

Leila Haywood

Spring Hill has been a lovely change in venue for us, with the building completion finally coming to a close on our new facility. The practice in East Brisbane was knocked down in place of progress for the Lytton Road, Wynnum Road widening project by the Brisbane City Council. We have found Spring Hill to have a nice community feel with the primary school close by, cool cafes, and the mix of character houses and fig tree lined streets, within our elevated purpose built fit out, makes for a lovely vista. Being able to see the sunset from the rooms is lovely, and a welcome view given that we are no longer looking over the river. It has been 3 months in our new location, and we have had a wonderful response with patients loving the modern feel of the fit out with all glass rooms allowing the light to fall beautifully from room to room. We have decorated with flowers in every room, and have loved being able to put a touch on each room that makes for a lovely ambience.

Leila Haywood is away in July this year. Dr Amy Daley will be available to see patients on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7.30am, and Christine our hygienist will be providing dental hygiene services during this time. We have an offer for the July on Mondays and Wednesdays for $490 for Zoom teeth whitening technology, for the winter white teeth. Please call Sonia on 07 3391 2504 to assess suitability.

hi february

Leila Haywood

Well this is a sure sign that the year is well and truly underway. Dr Amy and Senior Assistant, Nikita, are heading off for an overseas getaway together with friends and family, and counting down the weeks. It really doesn't seem like too long until Easter now, now that February is coasting by.

Here at work, we are checking in on all of our patients, and as usual making sure that their smiles are healthy and looking their best. Dr Amy and I had the privilege of caring for 3500 patients last year.

RUGBY SEASON IS COMING SOON

RUGBY SEASON IS COMING SOON

MOUTHGUARD season is almost here, and it is timely to mention that professional mouthguards can prevent tooth fractures, loss of teeth and even fractures of the jaw, due to their superior support and shock absorption. Professional mouthguards are custom made in most colour combinations, and take around a week to make in the laboratory. We can even make them to fit around braces, and relieve areas where adult teeth are coming through to have the mouthguard last for a longer period of time. Just make sure yours doesn't end up in the dryer, in a rubgy short pocket, like my son's seemed to.

All contact sports, where there is any chance of trauma to the teeth or face, are best played with a professional mouthguard. They are comfortable, longer lasting, don't look like chewed up pieces of plastic, fit correctly, and don't fall out. Chemist, one size fits all mouthguards might be cheap at the outset, but sometimes not in the longer run, being that their main function is to 'have a mouthguard'. They seem to be mainly for show, with no functional capacity to protect teeth, being that they don't even cover the teeth and seems to float around in mouths, and come out looking like a chewed up film of plastic.

One case that really highlighted this was a professional rugby player in his 20's who needed both front teeth removed, a bone and gum graft for a year, and had to wear a denture for all this time. Then two implants were placed, with a new denture for 6 months, and finally I placed two implant crowns. This cost tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention the time and distress for the patient and his family. A professional mouthguard costs around $200. In the long run, they can save injuries to the teeth from impacts that may have dislodged them if not for the correct protection.

SPORTS DRINKS DENTIST BRISBANE

It is timely to discuss how oranges, SPORTS DRINKS, soft drinks and energy drinks when playing sport, do little more than wreak havoc on the teeth, causing catastrophic and irreversible damage in lots of our young patients, especially teenagers, young adults and professional athletes, known as TOOTH EROSION.  If possible, please hydrate with water, because these drinks seem to be laden with sugar in some form, and are acidic, and even those that are sugar free are acidic, which ultimately softens the teeth.  The way we see it strip off the enamel - the hardest substance in the body - has to be seen to be believed. The enamel never grows back, and then it places a young person in a position, where their teeth are forever vulnerable to ongoing damage and sensitivity.

At the moment, I have a gentleman who is having every single tooth restored with ceramic, to build up all the missing tooth structure that has been lost and damaged, which of course takes an immense amount of time, team work, and with computer aided design we can make everything like new, except that it doesn't always last a lifetime. By far, our preference is to have no initial damage to begin with and ongoingly, so diligent home care, a healthy diet and dental checks each 6 months are an important thing to do for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

SUMMER DENTAL BRISBANE

We look forward to catching up with all our patients and friends and wish everyone the best! Please call our patient co ordinator Sonia, if the time has come to see to your SMILE and it will be our pleasure to assist. Remember that we have a no blame approach. If there's a problem, we fix it. There is no judgement here, our jobs are to help, manage and care for your dental health from the moment we meet you throughout life. We will take every measure we can possibly can to ensure that you are comfortable.

SUMMER has been going on for what seems forever, so hopefully the weather will calm down in Brisbane sometime soon, but in the meantime, we have powerfully air conditioned rooms, as well as those beautiful views over the Brisbane River. We have yet to have a final date from council regarding the resumption of our dental premises to widen Lytton Road, so hopefully we never hear from them, and can stay here forever!

With the best of regards
