WINTER SOLSTICE

Leila Haywood

Spring Hill has been a lovely change in venue for us, with the building completion finally coming to a close on our new facility. The practice in East Brisbane was knocked down in place of progress for the Lytton Road, Wynnum Road widening project by the Brisbane City Council. We have found Spring Hill to have a nice community feel with the primary school close by, cool cafes, and the mix of character houses and fig tree lined streets, within our elevated purpose built fit out, makes for a lovely vista. Being able to see the sunset from the rooms is lovely, and a welcome view given that we are no longer looking over the river. It has been 3 months in our new location, and we have had a wonderful response with patients loving the modern feel of the fit out with all glass rooms allowing the light to fall beautifully from room to room. We have decorated with flowers in every room, and have loved being able to put a touch on each room that makes for a lovely ambience.

Leila Haywood is away in July this year. Dr Amy Daley will be available to see patients on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7.30am, and Christine our hygienist will be providing dental hygiene services during this time. We have an offer for the July on Mondays and Wednesdays for $490 for Zoom teeth whitening technology, for the winter white teeth. Please call Sonia on 07 3391 2504 to assess suitability.

Farewell January!

Brisbane Dentistry Smile Boutique

Bonsoir! Well that went fast. January is almost a fleeting memory, as we venture into the year. As one might expect, it has been so far full of smiles that visit us, requesting to be checked, professionally scaled, whitened and the like.

The year is promising to be another great one for our team. Sonia, our patient co-ordinator is on reception. Nikita is the senior assistant to Dr Amy Daley, who is working Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays from 7.30am to 3.30pm. Holly is the senior assistant to Leila Haywood, as well as her training up in 2016 and venturing into the business of beauty, which is perfect for her, given her eye for precision and style.

Christine is our dental hygienist, who attends to the magic that is Zoom technology, with transformations that impress our dentists. She has been caring for all the children who were on school holidays, starting kindy, prep, and school and the teenagers heading to high school and uni. The start of the year is the perfect time for a smile check, and everything else in between, and Christine assists our dentist to have all of our patients having the healthiest smiles possible.

Best Wishes to everyone as the year is well and truly underway, and wishing you days of happiness and sunshine.

It would be mine and Dr Amy's pleasure to be of assistance with any dental requirements.

Kindest Regards

HELLO JANUARY!

Leila Haywood

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our patients and friends, and wishing you a year full of happiness and healthy teeth. Our year has started with smiles en masse.

Dr Amy and I have been researching and training in the next generation technology, where the precision of ceramic milling has finally reached the standard that we are finding to be exceptional, and therefore acceptable. Our technician here in Brisbane is scanning our models in with the latest scanning software, and creating porcelain inlays and onlays, to replace composite resin and metal fillings. I am in the process of having one placed in one of my molar teeth and Amy and I are excited at how durable and aesthetically pleasing they are. They are now our material of choice for  larger restorations on the back teeth.

Composite resin has been lasting around 5 to 7 years for the average dentist; and of course patient - and it has its suitable applications, however for large fillings on the back teeth, porcelain is superior because of its strength, durability and aesthetics.

Christine, my hygienist, of 8 years! ... has been seeing to the transformation of healthy smiles with Zoom teeth whitening.

Late last year, I had the opportunity to check in with some patients who have had past restorations for review and maintenance.

Christine did some in office whitening for this lovely lady from the outback, and we then built up the two front teeth ( central incisors) to recreate a curve to the smile and to restore the worn down tooth structure. To help us maintain these, our patient wears a night guard to protect her teeth. These buildups have been in placed for 5 years.

This gentleman had 6 porcelain crowns and veneers to restore his top teeth in 2011, and the after photo is an update from 2016, which showcases the durability and lasting beauty of porcelain. Christine, my hygienist, has done in office whitening and provided active maintenance.

It has been a busy January for our team; seeing to cases and reviews, all the school kids for dental checks and cleans - especially checking if the toothbrush is also on holidays; resolutions for a healthy smile, preventive care and everything in between.

Please contact Sonia, our patient co-ordinator should you have any queries at all, on 07 3391 2504.

Wishing all of our patients and friends a lovely New Year, and a year of great things to smile about.

With the Kindest of Regards

Leila Haywood

Hello Christmas

Leila Haywood

End of year is always incredibly busy for our practice, and it continues like this into the new year until February.

Dr Leila Haywood is taking leave from the 16th December to the 9th of January. Dr Amy Daley is on holidays from the 23rd December until the 2nd of January.

Please let us know if you need an appointment prior to Christmas. The time limit for porcelain prior to the end of year is approaching. There are 2 more weeks that allow porcelain restorations to be made by our ceramist, and inserted prior to the end of 2016.

Wishing everyone the best

Best Regards

Well being

Leila Haywood

A great program being run by the Victorian government involves the release of a Well being Plan 2015 - 2019, with key priorities to improve the health and well being of the general public, and especially those who are disadvantaged.

Oral health has been identified as a key marker of general health, and with greater levels of oral disease being inclined to be an indicator of disadvantage.

Poor diet and consumption of sugar laden drinks are contributors to poor oral health.  An improvement in oral health is enabled with access to fluoride in water and toothpaste, good dental hygiene and regular access to preventive dental care.

The key areas of focus which are excellent guidelines are:

  • Healthier eating and being more active
  • Tobacco free living
  • Reducing alcohol and drug use, if applicable
  • Improving mental health
  • Prevention of violence and injury within the general public
wellbeing

By investing in the community and caring for individuals, it is hoped that a better sense of wellbeing and support leads to better health outcomes, happier and cared for individuals and an improvement in dental health, as well as over health and quality of life. Hopefully this preventive and advisory service will be expanded to all of Australia, for the benefit of all citizens.

dental care and wellbeing

Caring for ourselves comes under many chapters;

Being active with at least 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. Attending to diet; eating 2 pieces of fruit each day, 5 serves of vegetables, whole grain and unprocessed/unpackaged foods, and avoiding canned foods. Minimising salt and sugar intake, and in particular decreasing or ceasing consumption of sugar laden drinks, including soft drinks, Coca Cola, energy drinks, and additions of sugar to any foods or drinks. Dental hygiene and care with twice daily brushing and daily flossing, in particular prior to bed times. The Oral B Black, Genius or Smart Series are highly recommended, with use for 2 minutes, twice a day. Difficulty flossing can be overcome with a Reach Access Flosser. Stress reduction and minimisation techniques are also critical to wellbeing, as well as a good work- life - care balance.
