How Dental Bonding can Improve Your Smile

Leila Haywood

There are several options to restore your teeth to get a perfect smile. Front teeth can be restored with veneers, crowns, tooth bonding, or a combination of these. Teeth whitening technology and Invisalign orthodontic work can also be used depending on the symmetry of your smile, the condition of your teeth, and your facial features.

Tooth bonding involves the use of tooth coloured resin that the dentist matches from a very large range to the actual colour of your tooth, and can be used to:

    •    close minor gaps between the front teeth

    •    Repair fractured teeth

    •    Restore chipped edges of teeth

    •    Change a tooth shape

    •    Lengthen a tooth

    •    Improve discoloured teeth

Dental bonding is generally fairly easy to sit through, is usually painless, is mostly done without anaesthetic, is complete in one visit, and can make a big difference to your smile in a cost effective way for years to come. It can mostly be done without drilling the tooth.

The quality of a composite resin restoration is excellent when it is finished neatly, but it does wear down over time and can chip away if you grind your teeth or have habits like nail biting. It can also discolour and become stained over time with coffee and tea, wine, foods we eat, or smoking if applicable, but can be minimised by brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing daily and regularly visiting your dentist and dental hygienist each 6 months, so that they can buff away any stains that might have developed over time.

If you are looking for a long term solution,  porcelain veneers are restorations that are made in the laboratory with a ceramic specialist and your dentist. They cover the front of a tooth, and are sometimes suitable because they are more durable, are stain resistant and very strong. They are made in two dental visits, drilling and anaesthetic is usually required, and it is more expensive than tooth bonding.

A consultation with your dentist to discuss the options available to you may be helpful, and they can customise aesthetic treatments to suit your needs.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORCELAIN AND RESIN VENEERS

Leila Haywood

Veneers can be made from porcelain or from composite resin materials.  Resin veneers usually require removal of less of the tooth surface, and sometimes no removal at all, before placement. It depends on the bite, dental health, condition of the teeth, regular dental checks and lifestyle habits, as to whether they will be suitable.

If the entire front of the tooth needs to either be repaired or cosmetically improved, one option might be a porcelain veneer. A veneer is a very thin, custom designed shell of tooth coloured materials that cover the front surface of a tooth to improve a smile.  They are bonded to the front of the teeth to change the colour, shape, length, alignment and spacing of your teeth with porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are more stain resistant than resin veneers and have light reflecting properties that are more like natural teeth.

Porcelain veneers usually require two appointments. The first visit is to prepare the teeth by removing a small amount of tooth structure from the front surface of the teeth, and an impression is taken to make a copy of the teeth. The amount of tooth structure that needs to be removed depends on many factors such as the alignment, length, shape, spacing and any discolourations in your natural teeth. Temporary veneers are placed on your teeth, while the case and photos are sent to the laboratory for two weeks, and the second visit is to fit the veneers and bond them.

We are able to achieve a natural look with porcelain veneers because they are very thin, there is no metal to hide and they can mask underlying defects well. The aim is to produce a natural smile with work that appears natural and durable.

SPORTS PRODUCTS AND ORAL HEALTH

Leila Haywood

Tooth decay and erosion are on the rise. At least part of this disease process is thought to be due to the increasing use of specialised sports products designed to proved nutirents and fluid during exercise. Many of these are high in carbohydrates for readily available energy and electrolytes, however many have acidic ingredients to alter the taste or prolong the shelf life. Of course the combination of sugar and acidicity is damaging to the teeth.  In the last few year they have been heavily marketed to the general public, and of particular concern, is their regular use by children
Important points:

sugar

Important points:

🍭 main ingredients are carbohydrates -> sugar!

-  Acidity is 2.4 - 4:5

⚠️ when dehydrated the saliva dries up, and makes the teeth vulnerable to attack by sugars and acids

hole in tooth

Some tips:
💧 drink tap water for low intensity training and always for children.

⚠️ Use sports drinks and supplements with extreme caution.

😷 Calcium in foods might help to counteract some of the damage, and help in recovery.

⚠️ avoid rinsing moth guards with sports drink

💦 drink lots of water to ensure that the saliva is healthy.

🍋 avoid acidic foods or beverages before bed

⭐️ seek the assistance of an accredited sports dietician if necessary
