MISSING A TOOTH?

Leila Haywood

There are a few options to replace a missing tooth.

  1. PARTIAL DENTURE - The least expensive is a denture, which is acrylic with hooks around some stronger teeth to support and hold it in, which your dentist makes. They can allow bacteria or food particles to stick on them and around the teeth that hold it in place, and need to be taken out at night time. They also usually take some getting used to, and require meticulous home care.
  2. A BRIDGE is a computer generated section of porcelain that looks exactly like teeth that replaces missing or lost teeth by suspending a false tooth from the natural teeth on either side of the space. A bridge can restore lost teeth, support remaining teeth and help keep your teeth in their proper position and bite. If a tooth is lost and not replaced, the teeth each side of the gap can drift, and the tooth below may grow up and move out of the correct bite. Older styles of bridges have a metal framework that supports the porcelain.

A bridge uses a framework which is attached to healthy teeth either side of the gap where the new crown spans or ‘bridges’ the area completing the smile. The adjacent teeth need to be re-shaped and the bridge is bonded to these.

3. A DENTAL IMPLANT is a small titanium fixture that is placed in the jaw bone to replace one or more missing teeth. Implants and their artificial teeth closely resemble the look and function of real teeth. The implants form a secure base for the replacement of teeth, restoring full function and renewing self-confidence and peace of mind. They are an appealing alternative to dentures and bridges.

A single implant can be used to replace one, or several missing teeth, depending on the circumstance. Multiple implants can be used to bridge spaces and secure full dentures to the jaw bone. Dental implants integrate into the jaw bone and provide a very solid platform to re-create function (chewing ability) and aesthetics, by building and connecting the tooth to the base of the implant, which incorporates the new tooth into the existing bite or smile.
